National Fossil Day
October 13
National Fossil Day, observed on October 13, 2026, celebrates the history of life on Earth and promotes the protection and study of fossils. In the Cumberland Gap region, fossils can be found in nearby limestone outcrops and along areas of the Cumberland Plateau, offering a glimpse into the area’s ancient past. The Cumberland Gap Trail Alliance connects people to these geological treasures through trails, educational programs, and stewardship, helping visitors explore and appreciate the region’s unique natural history while preserving these sites for future generations.
